Wandering cherry blossoms in Kyoto on March 26th, 2020.

I visited cherry blossoms viewing points in the center of Kyoto with my bicycle.

I will introduce Rokkakukdo temple, Kyoto-gyoen, Ryuhonji temple, Senbonshakado temple, Joubonrendaiji temple, Suika tenmangu shrine, Honpoji temple.

It was the best time for weeping cherry blossoms and the beginning of the season for Someiyoshino trees, a major kind of cherry blossoms in Japan.

Rokkakudo temple

  • Comment:The temple is the birth place of “Ikebana”, the Japanese art of flower arrangement.

No.1 on the map is Rokkakudo temple, founded about 1400 years ago and the birth place of “Ikebana”, Japanese flower arrangement.

It is completely in the city and surrounded by big building.

The weeping cherry blossoms were at their best.

Kyoto-gyoen

  • Time:20min〜

  • Comment:Kyoto imperial palace park.

After Rokkakudo temple, I went to Kyoto-gyoen, the Kyoto imperial palace park at No.3 and No.4 on the map.

There are many seasonal plants in this park.

Weeping cherry blossoms were at their best at No.2 on the map.

I saw many kimono girls around here.

They are at their best as well.

The distance from No.2 to No.3 is about 1km, so it takes a long time on foot.

I finished the tour in about 20min with my bicycle.

Ryuhonji temple

  • Comment:There are many “Someiyoshino”, which is a major kind of cherry blossoms in Japan.

After Kyoto-gyoen, I went to Ryuhonji temple at No.4 on the map.

It is an old temple founded in 1321.

The cherry blossoms, Someiyoshino, were just starting to bloom.

Senbonshakado temple

  • Comment:The birth place of Okame, the Japanese traditional mask of a woman or a goddess.

After Ryuhonji temple, I went to Senbonshakado temple at No.5 on the map.

The main hall was built in 1227, the oldest wooden building in Kyoto and a national treasure.

The cherry tree there is called “Okame sakura”, the cherry blossoms were at their best.

Joubonrendaiji temple

  • Comment:There are many “Someiyoshino” trees, a major kind of cherry blossoms in Japan.

After Senbonshakado temple, I went to Joubonrendaiji temple at No.6 on the map.

It was founded about 1400 years ago.

Suikatenmangu shrine

  • Comment:The oldest Tenmangu shrine in Japan.

After Joubonrendaiji temple, I went to Suikatenmangu shrine at No.7 on the map.

It was founded in 923, ordered by the Japanese emperor at that time.

There are many Tenmangu shrines in Japan, but this is the oldest.

The red weeping cherry were at their best.

Honpoji temple

  • Recommendation:60%
  • Comment:Bigs buildings, a famous branch of Buddhism.

After Suikatenmangu, I went to Honpoji temple at No.8 on the map.

It was one of the main temple of a famous branch of Buddhism called Nichirenshu, founded in 1436.

The cherry blossoms were a bit earlier than the best.

Summary

I took about 4 hours from No.1 to No.8 on the map with my bicycle.

There are not so many train stations around here, it’s better to take the bicycle to see many cherry blossoms efficiently.

There are many rental bicycle shops in Kyoto.

This is a map marked with my recommendation spots in Kyoto.
