Cycling in Kyoto on April 11th, 2020.
I visited viewing spots in center and north part of Kyoto with my bicycle.
I’ll introduce “Nakaragi-no-michi”, Kamigamo shrine, Sanzenin temple, Kurama temple, Kifune shrine.

Nakaragi-no-michi
- Time:15min〜

- Comment:Tunnels of red weeping cherry blossoms
First, I went to No.1 on the map “Nakaragi-no-michi”.
It’s a promenade along Kamogawa river and famous for tunnels of red weeping cherry blossoms for 800 m.
The season of Someiyoshino cherry blossoms was already finished, but the red weeping cherry blossoms were near at their best.
I took photos for about 15min.
Kamigamo shrine

- Comment:A world heritage and a national treasure
After “Nakaragi-no-michi”, I went to “Saio-zakura” in Kamigamo shrine at No.2 on the map.
“Saio-zakura” means the cherry blossoms for the unmarried women in the emperor’s family.
When I came here on March 31th, “Saio-zakura” was before the best time and over the best time now.
I took photos of “Saio-zakura” for about 10min.
If you want to see all of Kamigamo shrine, it will probably take 1 hour.
Sanzenin temple
- Time:30min〜
- Cost:700 yen
- Recommendation:90%
- Comment:Viewing spot of moss garden and autumn leaves.
After Kamigamo shrine, I went to Sanzenin temple at No.4 on the map.
It is 12 km and go up 200 m altitude from No.3 to No.4 on the map.
Sanzenin temple was founded about 1200 years ago and famous for its moss garden and autumn leaves.
The moss garden and cherry blossoms were beautiful the day.
The most famous jizo in sanzenin temple.
I enjoyed its Japanese garden and took photos for about 1 hour.
Kurama temple
- Time:1 hour〜
- Cost:300 yen
- Recommendation:70%
- Comment:Temple of Tengu
After Sanzenin temple, I went to Kurama temple at No.8 on the map.
It is 2.5 km and go up 100 m altitude from No.4 to No.5 on the map.
Then go down 150 m altitude from No5. to No.7 and go up 70 m altitude from No.7 to No.8.
Someiyoshino cherry blossoms were still beautiful around No.6 on the map.
Kurama temple was founded about 1200 years ago and famous for monsters called Tengu.
The cost is 300 yen to go inside the temple and it takes about 30 min to the temple.
I just took photos in front of the gate for about 10 min.
Kifune shrine
- Time:10 min each at main shrine and rear shrine.本宮・奥宮各10分

- Comment:spiritual sites
After Kurama temple, I went to Kifune rear shrine at No.9 on the map.
It was founded more than 1300 years ago.
It’s famous for its god of marriage.
There are main shrine and rear shrine in Kifune shrine, I went to rear shrine first.
It’s small and simple shrine, but it was solemn.
After rear shrine, I went to main shrine at No.10 on the map.
The lanterns at entrance of this shrine were beautiful.
It enshrines a god of water.
I just took photos for about 20 min.
Summary
I went back to Center of Kyoto after Kifune shrine.
It took 6 hours and 30 minutes and 56 km distance and 1200 m difference in altitude for this cycling.
If you don’t like cycling, you can go these places by trains and bus.
If you like cycling, please try to go these many viewing spots by bicycle.
There are many rental bicycle shops in Kyoto.
