Wandering cherry blossoms in Kyoto on April 3rd, 2020.
I visited cherry blossoms viewing points in the center of Kyoto with my bicycle.
I visited many places from early morning to evening, so I’ll introduce them on 2 pages.
First I’ll introduce Keage incline, Nanzenji temple, Philosophy road, Sinnyodo temple, Konkaikomyoji temple, Okazaki-sosui.
It was the best time for Someiyoshino trees, a major kind of cherry blossoms in Japan.

Keage incline
- Time:15min〜
- Cost:Free
- Recommendation:90%
- Comment:Covered with many people in daytime
First, I went to Keage incline at No.1 on the map.
It’s a famous cherry blossom viewing spot.
These rails were used for hauling boats and their merchandise between Kyoto and the canal to Lake Biwa.
There are many people in daytime, so I went there before sunrise.
More than 20 people were waiting for the sunrise with cameras that looked very expensive.
I took photos with my cheeper camera for about 30 min and I felt it’s very difficult to make impressive photos…
The rail road is about 500m, so it takes about 15min to walk around it.
Zanzenji temple
- Time:20min〜
- Cost:Free except Hojo building
- Recommendation:90%
- Comment:National treasure
After Keage incline, I went to Nanzenji temple at No.2 on the map.
It is the head temple of an important branch of Buddhism called Rinzaishu and famous for its historical buildings and beautiful Japanese gardens.
It’s also a famous cherry blossoms and autumn leaves viewing spot, one of the most popular park in Kyoto.
This is the Sanmon gate.
This is the Hodo hall.
I took photos for about 20min.
Philosophy road
- Time:30min〜
- Cost:Free
- Recommendation:80%
- Comment:Cherry‐tree‐lined promenade
After Nanzenji temple, I went to Philosophy road at No.4 on the map.
Philosophy road is a promenade of about 2km. It was named after a philosopher who had a walk there every morning.
It’s a famous cherry blossoms viewing spot and there are many people in the season.
It was early morning, so there were less people in Philosophy road.
It takes about 30min on foot, but on the bicycle I went all the way in about 15min.
It’s a small road so it’s very difficult to ride the bicycle when there are many people.
Sinnyodo temple
- Time:10min〜
- Cost:Free
- Recommendation:70%
- Comment:Autumn leaves viewing spot
After Philosophy road, I went to Sinnyodo temple at No.5 on the map.
On the way to Sinnyodo temple, Munetada shrine, No.4 on the map, was very beautiful with many cherry blossoms.
Sinnyodo temple is famous for its beautiful autumn leaves and there were not so many cherry trees in the temple.
I took photos for about 10min.
Konkaikomyoji temple
- Time:15min〜
- Cost:Free
- Recommendation:80%
- Comment:Autumn leaves viewing spot
After Sinnyodo temple, I went to Konkaikomyoji temple at No.7 on the map.
The very famous monk “Honen” lived there in a small house about 900 years ago, then the place was turned into a temple.
About 300 years ago, the temple became the headquarters of a famous samurai group called “Shinsengumi”.
It’s famous for its beautiful autumn leaves, but there are many beautiful cherry blossoms as well.
I took photos for about 15min.
Okazaki-sosui
- Time:15min〜
- Cost:Free
- Recommendation:80%
- Comment:Cherry‐tree‐lined canal
After Konkaikomyoji temple, I went to Okazaki-sosui at No.7 on the map.
It’s a famous cherry blossoms viewing spot in Kyoto.
These photos were taken at No.7 on the map.
These photos were taken at No.8 on the map.
I took photos for about 15min.
Summary
I took about 3 hours from No.1 to No.7 on the map with my bicycle in early morning.
Usually there are many people in this area, so it’s easier to take photos in early morning.
There are not so many train stations in the area, so it’s better to take the bicycle to see many cherry blossoms efficiently.
There are many rental bicycle shops in Kyoto.
This is a map marked with my recommendation spots in Kyoto.
